Coated Lenses
any optometrists out there who can help me with lenses?
I am looking to buy a pair of glasses at doctors vision works but am concerned that i am being screwed over. I have a very high prescription and need a high index 1.67 lens. They say I need something called midindex mlp and clearshield AR. They said one is a coating to reduce glare and the other is for scratching. Do I really need this? Dont high index lenses already come with this? Thank you
It depends if you are talking about single vision lenses or bifocals.
On single vision lenses, that are within the ” stock ” range , they are available already coated with the anti reflection coating. The anti scratch coat is always there already. There shouldn’t be 2 seperate charges for Anti reflection and anti scratch. An Anti reflection coating always includes the anti scratch already.
The 1.67’s are available without the AR, but the anti scratch is there anyway.
So yes…Anti reflection ( which includes anti scratch ) are needed on a high index lens…but it may be worth shopping around. Optometrists charge a lot more for the same thing than most opticians do.
